What is PAT testing?
Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the examination of electrical appliances and equipment to ensure they are functioning properly and are safe to use. A PAT test is an ideal way of ensuring that your appliances are safe.
What is a portable electrical appliance?
Portable electrical appliance refers to electrical equipment that can be moved from one place to another. For example computers, copiers, kettles, toasters, coffee makers, televisions etc. Portable appliances usually have a lead with a plug attached.
A full PAT test comprises both a visual inspection and a more detailed inspection using specialized PAT testing equipment. The PAT test includes earth continuity, lead polarity, and insulation resistance checks.

What categories of electrical appliances are there?
Electrical appliances are primarily categorized as Class 1, 2 or 3. Class 1 indicates the most dangerous appliances and Class 3 the least dangerous.
The class of an appliance helps determine whether it needs to be PAT tested as well as to what extent. Class 1 appliances need a full PAT test, Class 2 appliances need a PAT insulation test, and Class 3 appliances don’t need to be PAT tested at all.
- Class 1 appliances: This type of electrical equipment has only basic insulation and relies on an earth for protection. For example: fridges, microwaves, irons, toasters, kettles, vending machines, washing machines etc.
- Class 2 appliances: This type of electrical equipment has extra insulation and does not depend on an earth for protection, which makes it safer. For example: printers, lamps, televisions, hair dryers, lawnmowers etc.
- Class 3 appliances: These are low voltage items and are the safest class of electrical appliance. For example: laptops, mobile phone chargers, torches, cameras etc.
